The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali are a collection of 196 Indian sutras (aphorisms) on the theory and practice of yoga. We will view this text from a historical level as well and how this can/can't apply to our modern lives. For both students and teachers who are new to this text, or have only viewed it from a cursory level.
It is a dense but concise text that can be extremely helpful and illuminating for the modern day meditation practitioner. Yoga translates as a joining or union with divine. Of course there are more variations and nuances to the actual definition itself, and if you join in this study group you will learn more about this and a deeper perspective of meditation.
Historically, there are some records of physical postures being preformed, but the seated position is primarily the position to practice classical Yoga. We may choose to do forms of physical exercises to assist being prepared for a seated meditation.
If you decide to join, you will need to purchase your own copy of the book. The translation and commentary is specific to the study and you will want to have the precise one. It is available from all major book retailers.
